Mwamba RFC’s star winger, Collins Injera announced his come-back to the International Rugby Board HSBC Sevens World Series by top scoring at the Wellington Sevens, the fourth tournament of the nine.

Injera who ruled the roost two seasons back scored seven tries in Wellington, one ahead of New Zealand’s Frank Halai while South Africa’s Cecil Africa and Dan Norton (England) each had five tries.

Injera was third among the top points scorers in Wellington with 35 points. New Zealand’s Tomasi Cama top scored with 45 while South Africa’s Cecil Africa had 43. Injera tied with Colin Gregor (Scotland) and Lolo Lui (Samoa).

Lavin Asego had 22 points. This is Kenya’s form as they fly out of New Zealand Sunday to the USA for the Las Vegas Sevens, the fifth tournament which kicks off on Friday at the Sam Boyd Stadium.

Injera will be a marked man in Las Vegas were Kenya has been drawn in Pool D with England, Scotland and Brazil.

Winning the Bowl in Wellington served to announce Kenya’s return. They missed qualifying for the main cup quarter finals only just because of a customary complacence conceding a try in the last minutes of the game.

Asego, a doubtful starter after barely recovering from a soft tissue rib injury was in a spanking form and the combination of Injera and Kayange unfathomable.

Meanwhile, Mwamba RFC scored the biggest win in the weekend's round of the Kenya Cup, beating Homeboyz 41-9.

Try scorers for Mwamba were Tito Oduk, Dennis Ombachi, Saki Tuni, Dan Sikuta, Eric Avungana and Chris Asego. Oduk slotted four conversions and a penalty.

Player-coach Tito Oduk said this was a much better performance by Mwamba. “They stepped up from the Mean Machine game,” he said.

It took sometime for the two new Mwamba players, Jiuta Cabeimasada and Saki Tuni to adjust but when Tuni found his rhythm, he put in big hits and got a try just before half time. Avungana is nearly back to his old form.

"Tall" speaks to the IOC for Sevens inclusion in Olympics
AP Photo
--------------------------------

(L-R) Mike Miller - CEO of the International Rugby Board, Cheryl Soon - Captain of the Australia Women's Rugby Sevens team wearing her gold medal for winning the Women's Rugby Sevens World Cup, Humphrey Kayange - Captain of the Kenya Men's Rugby Sevens team and Bernard Lapasset - Chairman of the IRB; in a London hotel, Tuesday May 26, 2009. The four held a briefing with the media in their bid to try to make rugby sevens an Olympic sport by 2016.

--------------------------------

Kenya’s Sevens rugby skipper Humphrey Kayange has said that the admission of the sport in the Olympics would enhance the chances of smaller nations winning team medals. Kayange, who inspired Kenya to four Cup quarter-finals, three semi-finals and one final in the just-concluded IRB Sevens World Series, will be in Lausanne this weekend to make a key presentation before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board.

He is a member of a four-panel bid committee representing rugby at the presentation, which will also involve the six other disciplines which have been short-listed for inclusion in the 2016 Olympics.

“The inclusion of the sevens will expand opportunities for the lesser developed countries to make their impact at the Olympics. I believe Kenya will get a chance of winning a medal,” Kayange told AFP ahead of his departure for Lausanne. "I didn’t expect us to get to this stage, but this shows that sevens is developing very fast. Any country in the world, regardless of its financial status, can play the sport,” he added.

Rugby sevens is competing along with golf, baseball, softball, karate, squash and roller-sports for the only two slots in the games. The IOC will meet in Copenhagen in October to make their vote.

Kenya 7s team for Darwin, Wellington and Las Vegas Named Kenya 7s Team
Wednesday, January 13, 2010

The Kenya Airways national seven-a-side rugby team to play in the third and fourth leg of the International Rugby Board Series 2010 has been named.

The team to play in the weekend of 5th - 6th & 13th - 14th February 2010 was named this morning by the National Coach Benjamin Ayimba at the Rugby Football Union East Africa (RFUEA) Ground.

The team will leave on January 18, 2010 to compete at the Darwin, Australia event on its way to the IRB Series in Wellington, New Zealand and Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The National sevens team has been an inspiration during the last 12 months where we have been one of the form sides during the IRB series and also featured in the World Cup semi-finals. The team participated strongly at both the Dubai and South Africa series matches,” Ayimba said. The team has grown from strength to strength and is now considered the team to beat in the annual International Rugby Board Sevens Circuit, he added.

At the NZI Sevens in New Zealand, Kenya will play in Group C alongside Tonga, United States and England.

Similarly, the USA Sevens will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. As the fourth round in the grand prix-style calendar, the USA Sevens continues to expand its fan base both at the event and through record national broadcast ratings in the States.

At the USA Sevens, Kenya will play in Group C alongside Samoa, Scotland and Chile.
