Mwamba's home at Nyayo Stadium to sparkle with fine rugby from February 3

MWAMBA RFC announced their programme of matches that will launch Nyayo National Stadium as their home from February 3.
The Black Shirts, leaders of the current Kenya Cup, become the first rugby club to use Nyayo as their home when they host University of Nairobi Mean Machine on Friday night of that opening day. The Kenya Cup fixture at 7.30pm will be preceded by the two club’s “A” sides in an Eric Shirley Shield tie at 6pm.

Mwamba chairman, Alvas Onguru said they had completed discussions for a long-term stay at the stadium with the Sports Stadia Management Board [SSMB] custodians of both Nyayo Stadium and the Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani.
He said Nyayo Stadium manager, Lillian Nzile, was enthusiastic about welcoming rugby to the stadium following the recent hosting at the venue of the three-day international rugby festival -- Safaricom Sevens -- by the Kenya Rugby Union.
Mwamba expect wider attendance at their home matches, Onguru said, because of ample space at Nyayo and the elaborate beverage and catering facilities the club intends to lay out.

“For the nigh matches we shall ensure a time of watching great rugby under complete relaxation. All fixture days will have a double-header, including a Kenya Cup and an ESS match, and there will be plenty of time for all, including families, to spend at the stadium.”
A beer firm and a wines spirits company are among those partnering with the club to provide catering facilities.
Mwamba has already missed opportunity to host some home matches -- wins over Nakuru and Kenya Commercial Bank -- because Nyayo Stadium was not available then, but are all set to welcome Mean Machine, Nondescripts, Kisumu RFC, Impala, Harlequins and HomeboyZ in a programme that runs up to May 4.

There will also be the Enterprise Cup knock-out schedule between January and May and should the Black Shirts pick a home draw in any of the rounds, they will host it at Nyayo Stadium.

"Tall" speaks to the IOC for Sevens inclusion in Olympics
AP Photo
--------------------------------

(L-R) Mike Miller - CEO of the International Rugby Board, Cheryl Soon - Captain of the Australia Women's Rugby Sevens team wearing her gold medal for winning the Women's Rugby Sevens World Cup, Humphrey Kayange - Captain of the Kenya Men's Rugby Sevens team and Bernard Lapasset - Chairman of the IRB; in a London hotel, Tuesday May 26, 2009. The four held a briefing with the media in their bid to try to make rugby sevens an Olympic sport by 2016.

--------------------------------

Kenya’s Sevens rugby skipper Humphrey Kayange has said that the admission of the sport in the Olympics would enhance the chances of smaller nations winning team medals. Kayange, who inspired Kenya to four Cup quarter-finals, three semi-finals and one final in the just-concluded IRB Sevens World Series, will be in Lausanne this weekend to make a key presentation before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board.

He is a member of a four-panel bid committee representing rugby at the presentation, which will also involve the six other disciplines which have been short-listed for inclusion in the 2016 Olympics.

“The inclusion of the sevens will expand opportunities for the lesser developed countries to make their impact at the Olympics. I believe Kenya will get a chance of winning a medal,” Kayange told AFP ahead of his departure for Lausanne. "I didn’t expect us to get to this stage, but this shows that sevens is developing very fast. Any country in the world, regardless of its financial status, can play the sport,” he added.

Rugby sevens is competing along with golf, baseball, softball, karate, squash and roller-sports for the only two slots in the games. The IOC will meet in Copenhagen in October to make their vote.

Kenya 7s team for Darwin, Wellington and Las Vegas Named Kenya 7s Team
Wednesday, January 13, 2010

The Kenya Airways national seven-a-side rugby team to play in the third and fourth leg of the International Rugby Board Series 2010 has been named.

The team to play in the weekend of 5th - 6th & 13th - 14th February 2010 was named this morning by the National Coach Benjamin Ayimba at the Rugby Football Union East Africa (RFUEA) Ground.

The team will leave on January 18, 2010 to compete at the Darwin, Australia event on its way to the IRB Series in Wellington, New Zealand and Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The National sevens team has been an inspiration during the last 12 months where we have been one of the form sides during the IRB series and also featured in the World Cup semi-finals. The team participated strongly at both the Dubai and South Africa series matches,” Ayimba said. The team has grown from strength to strength and is now considered the team to beat in the annual International Rugby Board Sevens Circuit, he added.

At the NZI Sevens in New Zealand, Kenya will play in Group C alongside Tonga, United States and England.

Similarly, the USA Sevens will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. As the fourth round in the grand prix-style calendar, the USA Sevens continues to expand its fan base both at the event and through record national broadcast ratings in the States.

At the USA Sevens, Kenya will play in Group C alongside Samoa, Scotland and Chile.
