DOUBLE JOY: Injera wins Sportsman of The Year, State Decoration in Same Week
Mwamba winger, Collins Injera, the 2009 International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens circuit top try scorer, on Friday cemented his name in the country’s sports folklore when he was crowned the Kenya Sports Personality of the Year at the annual Sportsman Of The Year awards.
Injera, who was honoured in absentia by the gala’s chief guest and Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta, was away in George, South Africa, for the second leg of the IRB World Sevens Series. Injera beat world marathon champion Abel Kirui to second place while Gregory Oluoch, world champion in karate, was third.
Meanwhile, two Mwamba players were among recipients of State Orders, decorations and medals handed out as Kenya commemorated 46 years of self-rule.
In the Civilian Division of the OGW (Order Of The Grand Warrior of Kenya) , the State recognised Mwamba and Kenya Rugby Sevens players, Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange, alongside Kenya Rugby Football Union chairman, Richard Omwela.
The President annually awards the decorations to recognise individuals who have delivered outstanding or distinguished service to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities.
