NAKURU BREAK MWAMBA’S FIVE MATCH UNBEATEN RECORD
- By Louis Kisia
Mwamba opened the second leg on a high notch pinning down league leaders Nakuru 10- 5 at half time before they narrowly lost 25- 24 in full time.
The visitors opened the scores 5-0 with a missed conversion kick, only moments after settling in the game when Simon Wariuki pulled away from a maul set piece by his forwards to touch down a few meters from the posts.
The league’s top try scorer Horace Otieno then replied with a try for the black shirts at the corner flag from a quickly taken line out throw that saw the ball trade hands between Mike Mutuku, Louis Kisia, Collins Injera, Lavin Asego, Tito Oduk, Humphrey Kayange and Salaton Muturi. Oduks conversion kick went wide as the scores leveled 5- 5.
Prop Allan Limo added a second try for the black shirts at the corner flag after brilliant pickups from the forwards, to extend his teams lead to 10-5. Kayange then missed the conversion as the teams went into the breather.
On resumption a fantastic exchange of the ball between Louis Kisia and Sydney Nderitu from their own half to the oppositions 22 meter line gifted the hosts a third try through Humphrey Kayange. Oduk then converted as his team opened the gap to 17-5.
Minutes later Wariuki drilled over a penalty to bring his teams score to 8- 17. Graham Kombo then touched down near the posts after a good run from his captain Nick Lango who broke through three tackles. Wariuki then easily converted to bring the scores to a close of 15-17.
Full Back Leslie Ochieng then added a third try under the posts for the visitors as Ben Kamau easily converted for the lead to change hands to 22- 17 in favor of Nakuru.
George Mbaye who came in for Richard Nyakwaka then awarded the hosts a fourth try near the posts as Oduk easily converted for a 24- 22 lead, with only two minutes of play left.
But when Nakuru were awarded a penalty in the last play of the game, they opted for the posts and Kamau drilled it over for his team to win 25-24.
