MWAMBA POWER THEIR WAY PAST STRATHMORE
- By Louis Kisia
Mwamba narrowly beat a rejuvenated Strathmore University 24-18 in a Kenya Cup match at the Railways grounds, as the home and away league entered its fourth week. The students drew first blood and got their first try barely 5 minutes into the game from a push over maul, which saw prop Eric Kioko touchdown. Ian Chewaini’s conversion went wide as the students led 5-0.
Horace Otieno then replied with a try for the hosts at the corner flag after a good initiative by his forwards and Tito Oduk converted for a 7-5 lead. The student’s potrayed an outstanding performance and on one occasion denied winger Collins Injera a try at the corner flag.
A penalty awarded to the black shirts 5 yards from the opposition try area gifted them their second try through Louis Kisia after a powerful number eight pick up from John Ahenda. Oduk was sure with the conversion to extend his teams lead to 14-5 into half time.
After the breather Collins Injera was on target and touched down under the posts after a quick penalty tap from Paul Oketch. Oduk’s conversion went in through the sticks as his team opened the gap to a 21-5 lead.
A high tackle to one of the students by Mwamba full back Steve Okeyo saw substitute fly half Kenny Andola easily convert a penalty to bring his team’s score to 8-21, as Okeyo was yellow carded. The students immediately used the numerical advantage and were rewarded with a try by Felix Osiemo after a superb 40 meter run by winger Michael Wanjala. Andola’s conversion was on the mark as the students closed in the scores to 15-21.
Another penalty awarded to the students in Mwamba’s territory saw Kenny Andola slot it in to bring the scores to 18 -21. The black shirts then capitalized on a loose ball from kick off that was left to bounce by the students as John Ahenda put his name on the score sheet touching down at the corner flag, with Oduk converting to extend his teams lead to 24-18.
With only 5 minutes of play left Strathmore almost leveled the scores after substitute winger Hesborn Mataya took a quick line out throw that was intercepted by Strathmore’s number eight only to be denied a final try by Chris Asego. The black shirts defended viciously as the game ended 24 18 in favor of the hosts.
